Happiest Wednesday to you!

Wow. You guys blew me away Monday! The comments about your experiences living with or without “skinny rules” were so insightful and inspiring! Conversations like that are the reason I love blogging; discussing everything from controversial topics to delicious food to fitness fads—and everything in between—truly brightens my day. <3

Speaking of brightening my day…

Let’s chat about the sun….err, sunnyside eggs!


When I was living by my own skinny rules, there was no way I would have eaten two whole eggs for breakfast—albeit even one egg yolk! Too many calories…too much cholesterol…too much fat…blah blah blah. Now? I couldn’t imagine eating eggs without the yolk. The yellow is where it’s at, my friends! No silly rules for this girl.

Sure, I avoid gluten because it turns my stomach into a balloon; I stay far away from highly processed foods 99% of the time; and I’m pretty picky about where and how my eggs, meat and dairy are raised. However, restricting my dietary choices to a list of “acceptable foods” created by someone else doesn’t work for me.  I love whole, nutrient-dense meals, but I don’t hesitate to sink my fork into a TruWhip-adrorned strawberry shortcake from time to time, too.


Monday’s Memorial Day (GF) dessert!

I realize that people who follow a prescriptive diet for medical reasons are healthier and happier for it, and I think that’s awesome! Food truly can cure, and sometimes adding or eliminating foods is the answer to living a healthy life. I also completely respect those who follow a a diet for ethical, moral or spiritual reasons. What we put into our bodies is a very personal choice, and I firmly believe that what works for one person very well might not work for another.


What works for me is a semi-clean eating everythingtarian (i.e. nothing is completely off limits) plan. This means healthy food most of the time, with a side of not-so-healthy some of the time. The result? A healthy and happy me. :)

Since it’s What I Ate Wednesday, and I haven’t shared a full day of non-travel day meals in what feels like aaaages (my San Francisco and Park City foodie adventures were pretty epic, though!)  let’s take a look at yesterday’s somewhat typical but certainly not boring (heh 😉 ) eats…

Back to those eggs… Talk about the longest digression ever?


As much as I love my runny yolks, the star of the morning was cheese.


Oh my gosh, YOU. GUYS. This stuff is my new kryptonite. It’s a salty n’ sweet-lovers dream. If you haven’t honey goat cheese (or goat cheese with honey) get on it.

p.s. I’m a total cheese hoarder. Yesterday I realized I have nine types in my fridge. Heh.

I softened the goat cheese for few minutes in the microwave, spread it on one toasted Van’s waffle, and then drizzled extra honey on top. On the other waffle, you see “melted” strawberry jam (just strawberries cooked in the microwave for 40 seconds).

Of course, I couldn’t help but stack everything together…


I was tempted to type #yolkporn, but in all honesty, I really can’t stand that hash-tag. Porn, in my opinion, is disgusting. Sunnyside eggs most certainly aren’t disgusting! 😉


Breakfast powered me through a TOUGH leg workout, which looked like this:


In between sets, I sipped on Fitmixer BCAA fruit punch aminos, which provided a much needed boost.


I would nurse this stuff all day, if I could. It reminds me of the Hawaiian Punch I used to love as  kid! However, because it contains caffeine,  I have to cut it off after noon.

I was ravenous when I arrived home, so I quickly whipped up protein banana “frozen yogurt” in the Magic Bullet.

IMG_2822-1024x682In the mix: one frozen banana, one scoop of MRM Vanilla Whey, and 2 tablespoons PB2. Thick. Creamy. Yum.

Sidenote: if you’re looking for a new whey protein powder, I highly recommend MRM. It’s all natural, stevia-sweetened, DELICIOUS, and most importantly, it doesn’t upset my stomach like other whey powders tend to do.


After showering, I headed to my favorite place between four walls for a three hour-long NASM studying session. While I was there, I made a visit to the salad bar.


Party in brown box! This one was packed with goodies: mixed greens, arugula, Moroccan carrot salad, cherry tomatoes, pulled chicken, blue cheese crumbles, red onion, butternut squash, red bell pepper, sliced almonds, and dried cranberries. I drizzled my favorite sesame tahini dressing on top, and DUG in.


A few hours later—still at Whole Foods—I snacked on a Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Zing Bar


These are quickly becoming my favorite energy bar. They’re soy-free, packed with protein, and taste like a healthified cookie. Triple win.


There was lots of food crowding our fridge that needed to be eaten from Monday’s Memorial Day barbeque, so dinner was a total repeat from the night before.


Even though I’m not typically a fan of leftovers, I had absolutely zero complaints about eating this meal again. Everything tastes better when it’s thrown on the the grill, right? Right.

On my plate: Steak and vegetable kabobs, spicy sweet potatoes fries (<—love!) arugula salad with ranch dressing, and grilled corn on the cob (<—first of the year!).

Bedtime Snack

It’s been awhile since I’ve had whipped cottage cheese, but it made a comeback last night!

So there ya have it! My semi-clean-eating-everythingtarian-carbs-any-time-of-the-day-some-sugar-added eats.

Not perfectly vegan; not perfectly South Beach; not perfectly Paleo…but perfectly imperfect for me. :-D

I want to know….

What’s your daily caffeine intake typically look like? Do you have a coffee/tea cut-off time?

If I drink caffeine after noon, I’ll be buzzing ALL night. I’ll usually have one or two cups of coffee in the morning, BCAA’s pre-workout, and then nothing more the rest of the day. Even caffeinated teas, which contain a lot less caffeine, affect me! It’s funny because I was a twice/day Red Bull girl all the way through college (shudder), and it never kept me awake.

What’s your favorite food to grill?

Corn on the cob! Runner up: salmon.

Any other cheese hoarders out there? How many types of cheese do you have in your fridge right now? Which are your favorites/which do you typically have on hand?

    I love connecting and reading your posts Sara 😉 And you are always welcome at my family table- day or night- we would Delight in your company. I am also keeping my eye out (two when possible) for an Italian man suitable for your beautiful soul. I cut out caffeine after 2 usually, except chocolate… Chocolate is an anytime occasion! Grilled fish, eggplant or artichokes are my grilling picks- and calamari (perhaps I’ll just leave it at seafood in general!). I admire your cheese stash! I only have Parmesan on hand regularly, I am lucky to have fantastic markets to visit where I buy a small amount of the cheese I want to use that day (spoilt) I like to think it’s very Parisian lol 😉 Also my nonna makes cheese sometimes and I never know when she will bring a beautiful piece that must be eaten (at that moment lol). I did think of something I do kind of have as a rule but I don’t think of it so formally- it’s more of a moral decision and intuitive way of dealing with the world around me- I do not eat any meat or animal product that has been kept in a manner I disagree with. I am actually very picky about where the animals I eat have come from and the life they lived. A choice I am thankful to have :) Your food sounds so intriguing to me- delicious and I can’t think but what fun it would be if ever I visit! Many hugs and love Sophia

      I definitely agree with you about chocolate–I enjoy it ANY time of the day. Fortunately, the caffeine content doesn’t seem to bother me; I’m not sure what I’d do if it did! I’d probably just stay awake all night because the thought of going chocolate-less after dinner sounds a bit too unbearable. 😉

    This diet sounds PERFECT to me!! And if it’s the one that works for you, even BETTER. You just reminded me, that I deen to whip up cottage cheese soon. It’s so good, right?
    I drink green tea all morning and in early afternoon. I can also drink espresso before bedtime and sleep like a baby. I guess I am kind of immune :-) GRILL: Salmon, chicken and scallops!!
    And cheese, well, I am Swiss….i LOVE cheese. But I love it so much, I can not have it at home, otherwise I would live of it! My faves: Gruyère, Parmesan, Tète de Moine, Feta Cheese, Cottage Cheese and Sbrinz. hmmmmm.

      Oh yes, whipped cottage cheese is amazing! It tastes like cheesecake when you add stevia or sugar (honey is really good, too!).

    I am actually caffeine intolerant, so basically anything containing caffeine (even dark chocolate sometimes) can make me really sick. The sad irony is that I’m a barista, so I am making people coffee all day that I can’t even drink!
    I LOVE the look of those waffles! I’m going to be totally honest here – I’ve never tried a waffle! I think they look great though!
    I like cheese, but am a bit fussy with it. I have a ‘no raw cheese’ rule, which sounds odd, but I don’t like cheese if it hasn’t been melted or cooked, I think it’s a textural thing.
    And I am SO with you about those annoying has tags! I really, really hate #eats for abs (I mean come on, shouldn’t it be #eattostayalive?), and the porn one as well.

      I can imagine it must be really tough being caffeine intolerant, but hey, there is a bright side: think of all the money you save on coffee and tea purchases! I bet working with coffee all day kind of reduces coffee cravings, too…I remember when I worked at Starbucks, it was the last thing I wanted because I smelled like it ALL THE TIME. 😉 I agree with you about cheese–melted is so much better! <3

    I think your approach to eating is very sane and healthy :) There’s no need to cut out foods unless you have a medical reason to.

    I surprisingly do not seem to be affected by caffeine at all given how little I drink it. I have a cup of tea every morning, but coffee only once or twice a week. If I go out for dinner, I will often end the meal with a single espresso. You would think that would keep me awake but no! I can also drink tea right before bed with no problem. The only time I’ve ever been seriously affected my caffeine was when I ordered coffee in Hawaii and got a cup as big as my head. It must have had 3-4 shots in it as I was buzzing off the walls!

    hello runny yolk fellow~~~ why is it sooo good?

    I’m intrigued by that honey goat cheese, it sounds perfect, I love the blueberries goat cheese, I’m sure i’ll like this one too.

    I drink 1 decaf capucchino on working days, 2 if not. I cut off dairy for ethical reasons but I still do goat cheese sometimes.

    favorite grill food= bell pepper, onion, tomato, corn, zucchini, all dizzed with olive oil.

    I’ve never seen anything like that goat cheese before but could totally get on board with it! Grilled goat cheese on a salad with honey drizzled on top and pine nuts is one of my favourite dishes! I love runny eggs, especially when you can use the yolk for dipping. I love to see a Wholefoods salad box too :)
    Dinner looks fab, I love grilling pretty much everything! Peppers, cheese, fish, chicken (especially with avocado on the side).Sweet potato fries are delicious too. Please say you’re coming to the UK soon so we can hang out and feast together!

    Call me weird but you make even foods I don’t eat – like eggs (sorry, Sara!) – look amazing. I’d happily visit and have you cook for me all of the time. Especially if that barbeque spread and shortcake were included!

    Reading that you’re a cheese hoarder made me laugh. I’ve always been quite boring in terms cheese even when I was still eating it regularly. Cottage cheese, brie and gouda must have been my favourite. Oh, and we can’t forget Babybel which my mum wasn’t too happy about my sister and me buying.

    There are too many hashtags that bug me to name any specific ones. Generally speaking, though, I’m bothered by people using way too many hashtags. Tweets basically consisting of hashtags?! That’s ridiculous.

    I take the same approach to eating: with the exception of gluten, I don’t cut anything out, and I follow a 90/10 principle of healthy eating and indulgence. That said, I’m a big believer in the theory that different things work for different people! :)

    As for caffeine, well, it quickly became my life force when I discovered it in college. (I was never allowed to have caffeine when I was growing up, so when I tried a nonfat almond latte my sophomore year of college, I was like…SHAZAM! HOLYCRAPTHISISAWESOMEIMMADRINKTHISEVERYSINGLEDAY.) I have 2 cups of coffee in the morning, and then switch to tea after that. I have to cut it off around 2-3 p.m., though, or else it screws up my sleep schedule.

    Lastly: cheese hoarders unite! I’ve got Swiss, cheddar, Gouda, mozzarella, Parmesan, and feta in our fridge as I type this. I love cheese so. Effing. Much. 😉

    Absolutely LOVE your outlook on food! I’d like to think I have the same attitude too! Healthy most of the time but gotta have the not-so-healthy stuff sometimes :) That leg workout looks intense! How many reps do you do per set of each exercise? I want to try it!
    And that goat cheese looks soooo good. I’m a huge fan of the sweet and salty combos…and cheese. And the yolks really are the best, especially when they’re runny!
    Last thing–the whipped cottage cheese looks delicious.

      Hey Alison! For most of the exercises, I actually change the number of reps for each set. Some start with 15 then drop (12, 10, 8), others start a bit lower and only drop once (10, 10, 8, 8). As I get stronger, I switch up my reps/weights. If you want, I can email you what I did yesterday!

    So I adore you. I adore this post and I adore your approach to food – I have the same style. I don’t seem to have any allergies or intolerances to anything (which I realize I’m extremely lucky for) so I eat everything from veggies to onion rings to Reese’s peanut butter cups. And I’m much happier for it!
    And that goat cheese looks amazing. I’m already a huge fan of chevre, but throwing honey into the mix? I only have 3 types of cheese in my fridge right now (chevre, parmesan and cottage cheese) but that is incredibly low for me – I usually have 5 or so! Definitely going to need some new stuff when I go grocery shopping this weekend.

    I’ve never seen it, but apparently there’s a #thighgap out there…and that drives me slightly insane.

    A little bit of everything definitely makes me a happier person! The only foods I don’t eat are foods I don’t like. I just try to keep things balanced. I couldn’t live by any rules like paleo or Atkins. I’d hate to think I couldn’t eat something because I ‘wasn’t allowed’. But I can understand people avoiding things if it doesn’t make them feel great. Luckily I don’t have too many problems with bloating or getting sick. Though I know I should probably not eat so many apples haha.
    In terms of caffeine, I try and only have two cups of coffee or tea a day. At the weekend I stop drinking tea/coffee at midday. During the week it doesn’t matter how late in the afternoon I leave it as I’m usually so tired anyway it doesn’t matter.
    Ribs are my favourite things to grill! Yum! But I love prawn (shrimp?) skewers as well.
    In our fridge we currently have cheddar, cream cheese, feta, mozzarella, cheese strings, Babybels and goats cheese. Whew. My favourite is by far goats but I love cream cheese to add to anything really.
    I love love the sound of your breakfast. Literally everything sounds heavenly! :)

      Hey, if the apples don’t cause bloating problems, I say keep eating them! I wish I could eat apples, but they actually upset my stomach! :( Fortunately cooked apples are okay, though, so I can still eat applesauce…and apple pie!

    I have a cup of coffee every morning, and that’s usually it. Two cups tends to put me over the edge, and I feel jittery for a few hours.. not fun. My favorite grilled food is definitely a burger, but I had some corn this past weekend and it was delicious!

    Love your approach to food, Sara…it’s so real and balanced! I hate the idea of putting labels on diet because that automatically opens yourself to a whole range of restrictions…which is totally unnecessary if those certain foods don’t cause any physical discomfort. Along with being an ‘everythingarian”, I am also very much a “qualitarian” in that I try to fuel my body with quality foods most of the time!

    We need to have breakfast together- I’m loving the sweet & salty combo! I just bought some cinnamon raisin bagels and I’m thinking runny eggs need to be involved. And if that does happen and I instagram it, one hashtag that won’t be popping up is “yolkporn”…it skeeves me out ;)! Other hashtags which drive me nuts are “cleaneating” & “fitspo”!

    As for cheese, you pretty much listed all my favorites…although I’m still undecided about how I feel about blue! Chevre, feta, parmesan, cheddar, cream cheese and cottage cheese on the other hand…any time, any place and I am GAME :)!

    I try to cut off coffee by 2pm, but with studying for the Bar I love having coffee to sip on, so it’s been getting later and later… not good! As for FAQs, I’d love to hear about how your strength workouts are going and any progress that you’ve made, haven’t made or any changes. I’m trying to get more into weights this summer so I love reading about anything related!

      I’m a huge advocate of steady caffeine consumption during long study sessions. For me, it’s not an option, it’s a necessity! And coffee is a much better choice than my former drink of choice: Red Bull. I can’t believe I used to drink that stuff! xoxo

    You, girl, are easily one of my favorite bloggers… and not only because you hate the #yolkporn hashtag as much as I do, but because your approach to food is so easygoing and balanced, which is even more impressive given how far you’ve come in overcoming your struggles with disordered eating. Like you, I’ve followed countless food rules and styles of eating, only to realize that they never really worked for me. It wasn’t until I gave up the rules and diets that I finally began to fall in to a place that feels good, which is pretty much exactly like the one that you’ve found for yourself. I love eating healthy, but I can’t imagine going back to a place where I ate healthy ALL the time and constantly denied myself the sweet foods I love. Life’s too short to say no to anything with chocolate and whipped cream :)

    I am with you– no porn in ANY hashtag and this is the first time I ever saw #foodgasm and just…no. Not for me.

    I also never liked it when people would write “it was like a party in my mouth” because it makes me think dirty-birdy. LOL.

    trader joe’s has a really good honey goat cheese! i combine that with dried cranberries and stuff them into mushrooms and bake them! ok well this was lindsay at the lean green bean’s recipe but i make it all the time – itz so good!!

    Oh yum – another great post!!!
    Loving the look of those eggs; drool worthy!!! I too love the “semi-clean” eating approach; I think otherwise things just completely backfire and you may have a few weeks of complete clean eating and then one day of just complete binging. It doesn’t work in the long run, well not for me anyway.
    Generally I don’t have that much caffeine in my day; I’ll maybe have 1 cup of coffee and then the rest is just whatever is in green tea.
    Would you believe I don’t really like cheese…mozzarella is the only one I can stomach and even then it has to be melted..anything else and I just cannot stomach it. In fact even the thought of it makes me feel sick! Strange!
    Haha I think I’m guilty of annoying hashtags, I only ever use them on Instagram though, the only one that particularly annoys me is #yolo?! I don’t know why it just really irritates me.

    When I read “hello again, lover” I totally pictured Carrie’s voice from Sex and the City! Ha! I really hope you know which scene I’m talking about otherwise I am going to feel so creepy lol. I also tried the “strawberry jam” method when camping this weekend. Brilliant! :)

    There’s been some hashtags that annoy me, but I’ve gotten over that. Whatever someone wants to post is their business, not mine so I try to ignore it for the most part!
    Haha, my caffeine intake can vary day to day. I drink at least one cup sometimes two, but I can’t have more than that or else I’ll probably die from a coffee induced panic attack. And then I drink like 2-3 cups of tea. I just love it too much.
    Oh gosh, I drank SO much red bull in college too and mixed it with alcohol when I was younger – pure healthy there.
    Favorite food to grill is always veggies. Any kind. Can’t get enough of the flavor.

    Girlll, when are you coming back to the east coast? Anddd cooking for me? Haha 😛 Everything looks delic! I’m loving sweet and savory right now so eggs and pancakes, goat cheese with jam on toast… Mmm! My favorite thing to grill is BBQ chicken and corn, but I also really like grilled romaine lettuce for a summertime salad.

    I try and not drink anymore tea by 4pm at the latest. Sometimes I will have a sneaky one at 4.30pm but I try and avoid it where possible.

    I love goat’s cheese and that one looks delicious.

    I feel like you and I have a really similar approach to eating – I’d consider myself a semi-healthy everythingtarian too. I like food too much to have restrictions haha. 😉

    Your grilled dinner looks sooo good. I’m pumped that it’s BBQ season again! My favourite food to grill is definitely cedar planked salmon.

    Right now I have cheddar, mozzarella, brie, parmesan, feta, Swiss, and blue cheese. I’m actually surprised I don’t have goat cheese right now because it’s usually a staple! I love combining goat cheese with sweet flavours too – at Blacktree over the weekend I had a beet terrine with goat cheese and truffle honey, which was seriously out of this world!

    I see that you use the fruit punch amino acids mix. Do you find that it’s beneficial? I lift several times a week, and see people using or suggesting other BCAAs. If it is beneficial, do you suggest that kind?

    I love your approach to eating, and the name too! If I had to label myself, I’d say I’m mostly vegan and mostly gluten free because eating that way makes me feel better, but I’ll definitely splurge on some gelato when I get the chance 😀

    I love grilling pineapple and asparagus but almost any fruit or veggie grilled is fantastic!
