Sriracha in My Sushi and the Saturday Six

by Sara on December 29, 2012

Happy Saturday! I hope you’ve been able to enjoy post-holiday festivities with your friends and family. :) My week has been…well, a little bit slower and…err, sneezy than expected. On Wednesday, a pesky bug hit me, so the  past couple days have been spent cooped up inside fighting a fever and watching way too many Downton Abbey re-runs. I’ve also been plugged into Pandora, as my family members have deemed post-holiday Christmas music-listening a no-go.

I say ba humbug! I’m easing myself off holiday music because going cold turkey would surely send me on the fast track  to a case of the post-holiday blues. Besides, I’m a firm believer that you should listen to whatever you feel like listening to, and despite feeling physically lousy, I’m definitely still filled with Christmas cheer. :)

*****

I was a bit too optimistic when I made plans to meet my best high school friend—and summer bride-to-be—for sushi and wedding chat last night. We wanted to discuss the dinner menu (buffalo brisket is the leading contender, as the wedding is in Montana!), as well as  my maid of honor duties and her bachelorette party. However, when 6:00 rolled around, the thermometer was still refusing to budge. A night at home it had to be.

hello, couch head hair!

However I was not willing to give up on the idea of sushi! Since my stomach was feeling a bit off, I erred on the safe side and ordered a simple California Roll – an old stand-by.

What showed up at the door, however, was a very glammed up California roll!  Actually, I’m pretty certain the delivery man grabbed the wrong bag. I’d requested brown rice, avocado and crab. The mystery roll inside my box contained white rice, salmon, crab, and red pepper, and was topped with avocado, shrimp and -the real kicker – sriracha.

Even though it wasn’t what I’d originally ordered, this roll looked way too delicious to pass up. And boy was I right; the flavors came together SO well! The spicy kick provided by the sriracha was a new-to-me variation that I’ll certainly be eating again. :)

I enjoyed every blissful bite, with one exception: the salmon roe. I still get the heeby jeebies thinking about eating fish eggs! Please tell me there are a few fellow wimpy sushi eaters out there? ;)

The rest of the night was spent cozied up on the couch with my mom, watching one of my favorite chick flicks.

name that movie

It never gets old! I love Kate Hudson.

*********

The last few days haven’t been entirely lazy, though. Since I’m staying away from the gym, I’ve taken my workouts to the kitchen. And the computer. And the stomach.

Okay, that’s a pretty desperate attempt to segue into the remainder of this post. A for effort? Today I’m rolling with The Saturday Six. It’s like the Friday Five, but with one extra bullet point. How’s that for creative? ;)

The Saturday Six

1. What I’m Baking: Cloud Bread. I saw this idea on Pinterest, and couldn’t help but give it a go. It’s so easy! Three ingredients: eggs, cream cheese (or cottage cheese) and stevia.

2. What I’m Pinning: Toasted Sesame Salmon. Possibly the most delicious-looking salmon I’ve ever seen.

{source}

3. What I’m Reading: The Downton Abbey Cookbook. This was the first book I downloaded on my iPad. I’m serious. I can’t wait for the show’s season premiere in a few weeks!

{source}

4. What I’m Crunching: Seaweed Snacks. Nothing clears the sinuses like a good dose of wasabi!

5. What I’m Searching For: Limited Edition Pringles. I’m only half kidding. I bet these would be even better made with sweet potatoes!

{source}

6. What I’m Considering: The Blonde Bob. I haven’t had short hair since I was in 7th grade. Yay or nay?

{source}

And before I go…a random dose of inspiration. Just because.

Live YOUR truth.

Have a wonderful weekend, friends!

<3

I want to know…

What’s your go-to sushi order?

I usually roll (pun completely intended…har har) with sashimi or brown rice sushi, but have made peace with white rice as well. :)

Favorite sick day chick flick?

Is anyone else still listening to Christmas music?

Do you prefer your hair short or long? To bob or not to bob?

I’m so tempted!

that sushi looks really good to pass by!
    hope you feel better soon.

I’m all for long hair, maybe I’m too scared of the change to a short hair! one day, I’ll be brave!

  • http://onehealthymunchkin.blogspot.ca/ Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin

Sorry you’re not feeling well! I hope you feel better soon!

Even if it’s not what you ordered, that sushi roll looks delicious! It’s got so many great flavours in it. My usual order is a wakame salad, a salmon roll, and 5-8 pieces of nigiri sushi.

I love How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days! I’ve seen it way too many times. You’ve Got Mail and Never Been Kissed are also two of my favourites.

That bob would look fantastic on you! I like my hair longer, but I’ve been considering going for a shorter cut too, just for a change. My hairdresser talked me out of it though and told me I had to keep my hair long haha.

That sushi roll looks amazing! If it was a mistake, at least it seemed to work out pretty well in your favour. I wish the restaurants around here did brown rice sushi! I don’t think I have a usual order when it comes to sushi…I love to mix it up! Although, my favourite right now would be an Odessa roll from my favourite restaurant here – it’s eel and avocado topped with salmon and more avocado.

Is that How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days? Classic chick flick right there, I love it.

  • Brittany Lesser

I hope you feel better soon!!! I love any sushi.. California roll is always a great back-up for me :) Love the blonde bob.. I recently did that but now I’m dying to grow my hair out haha

  • Isabella B.

That’s how to lose a guy in ten days, right? Love Kate Hudson!! Hope you feel better, I’m sick too :(

Oh that sushi! When you posted that the other day I was drooling! YUM!

Love you and I say rock that BOB! You could pull it off, would look so beautiful! I miss you friend so much! <3

How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days! One of my favorite movies of all time! I am such a chick flick nerd! Feel better girl, there are some nasty colds going around. Get lots of rest and take care of yourself. I need to try that cloud bread. I haven’t seen it until now but it looks so neat. I love the blonde bob personally. I’ve always wished I was blonde and that makes me want blonde hair even more!

  • http://www.lifealawife.com/ alyssa @ life a la wife

I’ve always preferred my hair long but I just cut it all off and couldn’t be happier!!

Sorry to hear you are not feeling well. Being sick is no fun. I have been enjoying some new books on my new iPad too! I am always a fan of the Holiday with Jude Law and You’ve Got Mail is a classic! I love the Whole Foods Market take away sushi selections. The Brown Rice Salmon Avocado Roll is my favorite. Don’t forget a side of edamame too! Take good care of yourself and warm thoughts for a speedy recovery! xx

  • Sarah

I put my Christmas CDs away but missed them so much I had to listen to pandora at work on thursday and Friday! I had some serious blues on Wednesday, guess I shouldn’t have jumped the gun in cleaning up after Christmas, although I had been listening to my 5 holiday CDs since Nov 1

  • Devon @ Health in Equilibrium

I bet that Sriracha cleared your sinuses right out! That cloud bread looks crazy too, it’s not even bread, it’s just a cheesy cloud of awesome!

  • http://lisalately.com/ Lisa

I hope you feel better asap! Rest and food will heal you right on up:) Yes! I’ve still been listening to holiday music too, I can’t face the fact that the holidays are over. I think after New Years is when I’ll finally stop. Obviously I’m a wimpy sushi eater, since I don’t like any seafood of any kind hah. I’m taking the week of exercising and am a buit stir crazy now, but I’m just rolling with it since I’ve felt crappy for the past week. I bet you’d look great with a little blonde bob! I could picture it!

  • http://fancythatfancythis.com/ Ameena

The sushi looks amazing and is always what I crave when I’m not feeling well. Something about the rice that totally makes me feel better! And I am low maintenance…some of my favorite sushi is from Whole Foods.

    Hope you are feeling better!

  • http://www.healthyfoodandfamily.blogspot.com/ Jen@HealthyFoodandFamily

I’ve never attempted sushi, but dang, that looks delicious!
I stopped listening to Christmas music today, it’s hard, but had to be done :(
I love my hair short, it’s so long right now and it’s making me crazy!

    Hope you feel better soon!

Oh and the movie: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days…one of my all time favorites!

  • Angela

Ooh is the cloud bread good? How does it taste?

  • http://jessielovestorun.wordpress.com/ Jessiejoshua21

Oh hunnie! You poor thing. I sure hope you’ve started feeling better!!! No one, especially you, deserves to be ill over the holidays.

I’m so happy you shared the link to the cloud bread recipe. It sounds awesome, and I’m thinking it may be made today =) =) Please get your hair cut. It’ll look adorable on you. I actually ordered those seaweed snacks the other week from Vitacost, not realizing I had clicked the wasabi flavor. Oh man, I’m not sure how you spicy lovers do it. It was way to much for me, Ha Ha. As much as I HATE wasting food, I had to toss them =(

  • http://www.cleaneatingveggiegirl.wordpress.com/ Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl

I hate being sick, and it always seems to fall at the most inconvenient times!! :(

That cloud bread looks amazing. I will definitely be trying that out!!

I love the blonde bob and I think that you could totally pull it off. I say go for it! :)

  • http://caitchock.com/ Cait the Arty Runnerchick

have to say that sushi looks awesome and i really do want to attempt that cloud bread! it looks quite easy, so i think even this kitchen defunk like me could do it! lol.

  • http://Www.annatheapple.com/ AnnaTheApple

I love How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days! My favourites have to be When Harry Met Sally, Pretty Woman and Sleepless in Seattle. Sorry to hear your not well, it sucks being ill! When I was ill I just watched loads of Keeping up with the Kardashians and food programmes.
That salmon that you pinned looks amazing. I definitely need to check that recipe out! I haven’t had salmon in too long!
    Feel better!

  • http://twitter.com/KhushbooThadani Khushboo Thadani

Loveee “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”. I totally think you should go for the bob- you have the perfect jawline to really rock that look! That sushi looks divine- my go to order is salmon avocado. I am okay with fish roe but I wouldn’t go out of my way to order it! Random question but have you ever tried bubble tea? The tapioca balls have a similar texture to fish roe.

Thanks for sharing about the Downton Abbey cookbook. You know I love that show so I will definitely be checking it out.

Hope you are feeling better, Sara! And for what it is worth, I am still listening to “All I Want for Christmas” on repeat :) !

  • http://www.runningwithspoons.com/ Amanda @ .running with spoons.

How to Lose a Guy! Love that movie, but it’s been forever since I’ve seen it.

Sorry to hear that you’re not feeling well, Sara – hopefully it’s a short-lived bug and you’re back to feeling 100% in no time. At least it didn’t hit you over Christmas and you were able to enjoy your holidays to the fullest :)

About the bob – I say go for it! Bobs can look so stylish and chic, and I think it would look fabulous on you. Hair grows, so there’s not THAT big of a risk, even if you don’t like it.

  • Kristen @ Swanky dietitian

I hope you are feeling better !! But at least you get to cozy in with chick flicks.
I need to get caught up on downton abbey!! I tried to tune into season 2 reruns on PBS and they seemed all out of order.
That sushi looks delicious!!! Love sriracha!! :)

  • http://twitter.com/kailey_x3 Kailey

I think you would look ADORABLE with a blonde bob – I say YAY!!
Hope you are feeling better lovely :)

  • Marylegarewhaley

Poor baby! Hope your cold clears up. I had a little mini cold a few weeks ago. Fortunately I was over it in about 48 hours. I always go for the rainbow roll when it comes to my sushi go-to order. However, I’m always game to try something new, as long as it’s nothing tempura fried or with cream cheese. Bring on the exotic fish, eel, and roe. When I was sick, I watched a bunch of episodes from season 3 of Castle (my favorite show). I keep my tree up for about a week after Christmas, but the music just doesn’t work for me after the 25th. There are benefits to long and short hair for sure! I love when my hair is short because it takes half the time to dry/flatiron it…and a LOT less conditioner. But long hair is more fun to play with (for me, at least). Right now my hair is pretty long but when I curl it, it shrinks about 6 inches. Go for the bob! That would be a cute look for you! =)

  • Sally

Yes, I say keep listening to Christmas music…at least until Jan. 1! I’m a California girl, so guess what my go-to sushi order is??! :) I think I got rid of my long hair during my senior year of college…many many decades ago! You’ll always look great regardless of your hair length!

  • http://gigieatscelebrities.com/ GiGi Eats Celebrities

OMG now I am DYING for some sushi… I was craving it earlier today but you have pushed me over the edge!! LOL. I ALWAYS go for salmon and unagi sashimi as well as salmon skin hand rolls and unagi hand rolls! I also get this thing called the Hamachi Kama – grilled hamachi neck, it’s DELICIOUS, OMG, a must try… But not when your stomach isn’t feeling well as it’s kinda fatty, YUM! LOL!

PS: That movie ROCKS MY WORLD TOO!!!! How To Lose A Guy in 10 DAYS!
