Creamy Coffee and Color Crazed

by Sara on May 9, 2012

Gosh, I’ve missed you all!

It feels SO good to have free time to write again! No more 50-page research papers for this girl. ;)   The past week was one of the busiest of my life; it was filled with ups (completing that crazy long paper), downs (a few too many missed workouts) , triumphs (I moved!) and tribulations (three  hissing squirrels were loose in my house–seriously), but I made it through, and now I have a free week to take a deep breath, catch up with you, and enjoy a few indulgent pleasures before I start summer session next week.

Instead of writing a long-winded “I did this, then I did that” essay, I’m going to do my best to recap with a “What I’m Loving Wednesday” post. :)

Enjoy!

1. Cappuccinos.

Yesterday was my first “free” day, so I took my computer to Dolcezza, a gelato shop located one block from my new house for some much needed “me time.” I relaxed, people watched, caught up on emails, uploaded photos and gave the blog a little TLC.

Dolcezza isn’t just known for it’s gelato; the coffee is supposed to be some of the best in the city, according to my trusty critic-friend, Yelp, so I was excited to give it a try.

Drip coffee at Dolcezza

I usually roll with decaf in the afternoon, but Dolcezza doesn’t stray from traditional preparation, so I had no choice other than to go “full caff.”

Another option I didn’t have? Lowfat milk. When I ordered a skim cappuccino, the barista looked at me, a twinkle in his eye, and said, “Oh you don’t want that. Whole milk is so much better.”

This almond milk-loving girl was skeptical.

But he was right.

I don’t think I’ll ever order a skim cappuccino again. :)

2. The return of rooftop happy hours.

On Saturday, I met friends at Policy to celebrate Jen’s birthday.

Okay, let’s not ignore the obvious here: someone got a little color happy. ;)

On the way over, I told my friend, Elaina, that I felt like a walking rainbow. I’m so in love with oranges, pinks and corals this season, so I couldn’t resist pairing the two together. People were either staring because I looked like stylista or because I’d taken the bright color-block trend a little too far.

Later that evening, my friend James confirmed my fears when he exclaimed, “Sara, what happened?!”

Color block gone wrong.

Whatever. I had fun rocking those orange pants and pink sweater. I’m going to own it. :-)

Fashion faux pas or not, the rooftop happy hour was a blast. Policy was holding a Kentucky Derby party on Cinco de Mayo, which meant free mint juleps (didn’t catch a picture) and sombrero-donning bartenders pouring free champagne.

So classy.

We also split several orders of truffle fries.

These were possibly the best French fries I’ve had in…well, years. And that creamy truffle dipping sauce on the side? To. Die. For.

3. New roommates who love moscato champagne as much as I do. :)

Meet Jared.

And Chris.

I’m now living in a house with four men, so you’ll be seeing a lot of these guys. On Sunday night, Jared brought a bottle of my favorite champagne to our in-house Mad Men-viewing party.

I think I’m going to like this living arrangement. In exchange for dating advice, I get free glasses of my favorite bubbly beverage! ;)

The part I’m not so hot about? Cleaning up their mess! Why can’t men boys get their dishes to the dish washer? They say they’ll do it, but it never happens. Oh vey.

I spent three hours organizing, scrubbing, washing and stacking pots, pans and plates in our kitchen yesterday morning, and snapped a photo so that I wouldn’t forget how it sparkled pretty for one hot minute. ;)

4. Pink post it notes.

See the photo above. They’ve become essential reminder tools in our house. No more “forgetting” that the blender doesn’t belong in the spice cabinet. :-p

5. Pink camera.

[source]

Speaking of pink (my favorite color—and it always has been!) check out the newest addition to my photography family! I use a DSLR to take pictures of food at home, but it’s a pain in the caboose to carry around during the day, especially because  it takes up half the space in my purse. So I usually resort to iPhone photos when I’m on the go. However, a few days ago I realized that I’d never used an Amazon gift card I’d received at Christmas, and decided to put the money towards a compact point-and-shoot that I’ll be able to use more discreetly at restaurants and bars. The sneakier, the better. :-)

6. Pastel nails.

Fun colors aren’t just for cameras and  clothes. Oh no. Bring on the pastel polish! I’ve been wearing these two shades all week: Essie in Art Deco and Revlon Quick Dry in Jade.

7. Liquid hummus.

Pretty much crack in a bottle. This has been dumped on top of nearly every salad I’ve eaten this week. If a Trader Joe’s is near your home—or even if there’s not and you have to drive two hours to reach one—I highly recommend you try this salad dressing.

8. Starbucks Frappuccino happy hour.

The Bucks has brought it back! From now until May 13th, Frappuccinos are half price between 3:00 and 5:00pm. Have you heard about the two new flavors, Mocha Cookie Crumble and Chocolate Cookie Crumble Creme? (!) Sounds like indulgence in a cup. Albeit delicious indulgence in a cup.

I’m getting my Frapp fix today. Are you?

I’ll be back in a few days with another post. Until then, humongous HUGS!!

**********

Questions for you:

What’s your milk type? Coffee type? Frappuccino type?

1) I love unsweetened almond milk (Silk brand is the best!), but think I’m on my way to becoming a whole milk-in-my-cappuccino-convert. ;) 2) I almost always order Americanos or espressos at café’s. 3) I love mocha light frapps!

Do you live with guys? Any tips on getting them to clean up?

  • http://www.sweatlikeapig.com/ Tara @ Sweat like a Pig

Oh dear, I don’t think I could handle living with four guys! I’ve had three male housemates in the past. They were all *okay* but I was still in charge of the cleaning! haha love the post it idea though!

Go the whole milk! I rarely have milk, but in my coffee I always have whole milk :) Liquid hummus sounds like a dream come true! Pity there are no Trader Joes here :(

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

I rarely ever have milk either, but it’s “must-do” when I’m drinking really good coffee at a cafe. Just like ice cream, the real thing is SO much better! ;)

Glad you made it through the craziness!!..although you might be crazy living with 4 guys ;) I lived with two right out of college, thankfully they were pretty clean though so no advice there! I would say you’ll have to get used to things being a little messy. I saw about Starbucks frappuccino….might have to get one tomorrow or Friday before work (or both, and Saturday too!)…I drink unsweetened vanilla almond breeze…like Americanos…and don’t think I’ve had enough frappuccino’s to have a favorite!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

You’re lucky that the guys you lived with were clean! I really shouldn’t complain too much though; they’re *trying,* and I’ll admit that it’s gotten a lot better! The post-it notes are helping. ;)

  • http://www.stuftmama.com/ STUFT Mama

Ah I love so much in this post! It sounds like you had a crazy week, but I’m glad you survived and are now living in a great new house (gorgeous kitchen btw!). I think whole milk cappuccinos are one of the most satisfying (and not unhealthy) “indulgences” out there. I usually stick with Americanos too, but occasionally I’ll treat myself to a mocha or cappuccino. LOVE those nails! I need to paint mine but only have red and pink polish right now…time to go shopping! And I’m excited about Frapp happy hour! Thanks for letting us know!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

I’ve always only painted my nails red or pink too. This spring I’ve been mixing things up a bit though…I love adding a little spicy flair where I can!

  • Julie

    1. Okay, I actually love your colorful outfit! Super cute! I’ve seen much crazier color combos!

    2. I NEED that hummus dressing in my life! I haven’t seen it at TJ’s, but will definitely look for it next time I’m there.

    3. I’m a three-shot Americano girl, with a splash of soy, please. ;) When I’m at home, I always drink almond milk, but it’s nearly impossible to find at cafe’s, so I roll with soy.

    4. Moscato IS amazing! It looks like you have a fun living arrangement!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Yay for three-shot Americano’s! That’s my typical order too (but always decaf in the afternoons!)

  • Gothextramileblog

I have a pink camera too ;) I actually do not like almond milk in my coffee. It tastes weird to me, I usually have half & half! I don’t think I could ever live with four guys. I’d go nuts trying to keep the place clean! haha

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

I’m doing my best to stay sane! Haha. I’ll have to try half and half in my coffee…Sometimes I use coconut milk creamer, but I bet half and half is even tastier. :)

  • Sally

Love, love, love this post! So many fun things in it! You’ve had a crazy week, but it looks like a fun one (except for the incredible squirrel story you told me….SO bizarre to have a squirrel fly in the air and charge you!). That capuccino looks so good. Maybe I need to change over from my usual lattes!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

I know you’re a latte devotee, but the best thing about cappuccino’s is that you get lots of foam (which I know you love). Try it! And yes, thank god those attacking squirrels are gone! :-p

  • Sally

ps…your new kitchen looks amazing! What a change from the old one!

  • http://twitter.com/AfterDin Caroline

Your kitchen DOES look sparkly! I hope the boys don’t mess it up! I love the pink post it notes everywhere :) I wish I had the patience to paint my nails as much as you do – mine literally always chip the day of or the next day so I rarely paint my fingernails :/

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Mine chip in a day too! I have to reapply polish pretty much every night! Kind of a drag, but I think it’s worth it in the spring and summer :)

  • http://www.hungrymeetshealthy.com/ Christina

you live w/ 4 guys! i am jealous! i love male roommates, but yeah, their organizational skills can suck. love those two nail polish colors. i have a mint green just like that. as far as your color blocking goes, you OWN THAT

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

      Haha, thanks, girl!

  • http://glitzglamgranola.com/ Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola

Omigosh so many things to comment on! First of all- congratulations on being done with the semester and that insane 50 page paper!!! That is a huge accomplishment and I hope that you are popping multiple bottles of champagne (also my fave) in celebration! That’s so funny about the whole milk cappuccino!I’ve experienced the same thing in Italy and NB but usually they give you a “you can’t be serious” kind of look! And I’m loving your bright color blocked outfit! Boys just don’t understand these things! Yay for your new roommates and your gorgeous house!! Please post more pictures soon! And I have that same Revlon nail polish and it’s one of my faves! I had it on my nails yesterday! And hummus dressing? Snagging that on my next TJs run! Hope you have a great week love and are able to relax and do some fun things during your week off! xoxo

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Thanks, Emily! So true about ordering coffee in Europe; I’ve experienced the same thing! They also scowl at modification requests…You either take it as is, or not at all! Haha. I love that we have the same nail polish–it’s so perfect for spring! xoxo

  • http://lifeisbetterthanfiction.wordpress.com/ Meg

I LOVE the colors and stand behind your choice 100%! Though maybe I would have paired them with a white and more springy shoes! Don’t let those serious east coasters get you down… ;)

Hmmm… not much I can say about getting men to clean up. Jer is actually the cleaner of the two of us, so while sometimes I get annoyed when he leaves his crap everywhere, he is great about jumping in and cleaning up with me.

    • http://lifeisbetterthanfiction.wordpress.com/ Meg

Oops, I meant to say a “white top” and springy shoes.

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Jer is a champ! Does he have any fellow friends who share his love for cleaning? I need to meet them! xoxo

  • http://www.juliegolean.com/ julie!

gahhhh i NEED to get that TJs hummus this weekend FOR SURE!!!! i wanted to get it the other day when i stopped before work but i had no room in my bag hahahaha oh well!

get your frap on girlfrand! xoxo

      DO IT! It’s uh-maaazing. <3

i’ve just recently started drinking 1% or 2% cow’s milk… i used to NEVER drink it, but i’m really enjoying it recently! whole milk in coffee totally wins though! yummm. coffee type? i’m a latte kinda girl. as for a frappuccino, i love the coffee light fraps. i need to hit up the sbucks happy hour!!
i live with my husband who is actually pretty clean for a guy… i’m thankful for that! i love the sticky note idea. i did that in college, except i lived with GIRLS who were super messy.

Haha, I was fortunate to live with pretty clean girls all the way through college, so I guess I’m getting my fair share of messiness now (but with guys!). :-p I love that you’re enjoying a little fat in your milk too; it really DOES taste better!

  • http://thewhaleydaily.wordpress.com/ Mary Legare Whaley

Hmmm 4 boys? That’s bold! Of course, I lived with 4 girls in college, and that was pretty disgusting too. I would clean because if I didn’t do it, no one else would. Boys just don’t see the mess. My brother brought it into focus for me: we were making breakfast at my parents’ house on Easter. He used the toaster and pulled it out from its designated nook. He also cooked some eggs to make an egg and cheese English muffin sandwich. I came back later and said, “Seriously? Is it so hard to put the toaster back where you found it?” He sighed and said, “I don’t know how you do it. No matter what, you never leave a mess. I thought I cleaned up. I even used paper towels.” However, he left the toaster all wompy in the middle of the counter. You just can’t teach basic organizational skills. Just encourage them to put dishes in the dishwasher (and don’t forget to turn it on later, because you KNOW they won’t remember to turn it on!)

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Haha, you’re SO right! They always “forget” the important details. :-p

  • Whit

I go with skim, but but that’s because I can’t actually drink dairy (it’s cereal garnish only). I’ve always used soy with my chai, but I’ve been told almond is a much better option.

I used to live with boys. I loved them so. The house was pretty messy, but they were so wonderful that I usually forgave them. I was the self-designated bathroom cleaner though. We all shared it and I needed that space to be up to my standards. :)

(Also, my toes tell me we’re due for a pedicure! haha)

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Haha, let’s exchange male housemate stories over a pedicure! How does this Saturday sound? <3

      • Whit

Why that sounds marvelous. I’m free all day. Save me from these briefs I’m supposed to be writing.

        • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Perfect! I will gladly help you procrastinate! :-D 3pm?

  • http://www.healthydivaeats.com/ Katie

Im married and I have a son, there is no help or miracle to have them keep things clean, lol!

LOVE you Sara! Miss you so much and was bummed you couldn’t get to NYC but I would LOVE to come out there to see you!!! I miss you!!

You rocked those pants and that whole color block thing going on, I think you looked fabulous! Love the pants!

YAY for you being done! I bet it feels amazing and like you can finally breathe!

    Love you!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

I love you more!! ;) I was super bummed I couldn’t come to NYC, but I’m pretending I was there by reading all about it! We’ll make up for lost time this summer for sure! Come visit me ANY time! I’ll try calling you tomorrow so that we can start planning. xoxo <3

  • http://livingchel.com/ Chelsa

I think your color blocking looks great. My favorite milk for coffee is soy. I know that soy isn’t the healthiest but I love it’s creaminess.

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Thanks, girl! Sometimes you just have to choose milk (or food) based on its flavor and not its health benefits, right?! :-)

  • Alec (Bro)

    A question and a comment:

Am I your coffee critic friend? Cause I’d rank DC coffee in this order: 1) Swings (just because its DC’s only hometown brew!!); 2) Dolcezza/Filter/Peregrin Espresso/Big Bear Cafe/Chinatown Coffee/Blind Dog Cafe/etc..; 3) ‘others’ like Illy/Bourbon; 4) Starbucks. Happy to accompany you on excursions to all the #1′s and 2′s!!

You KNOW not ALL boys are messy with the dishes. ;) Say it like it is…

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

This might be one of the best comments ever! Thanks, brother. ;) Let the coffee excursions begin! We don’t have much time before you leave!

Okaaaay, I admit it, not ALL boys are messy. Just 99% (with the exception of YOU!). <3 <3

  • http://theguiltlesslife.wordpress.com/ Anna @ The Guiltless Life

I LOVE that you’re sharing a house with men! I think that would be the easiest way to live – yes, if you can sacrifice tidiness lol. And I LOVE your colour happy outfit! You’re stunning!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Thanks, Anna! I’m not sure I’ll wear it again, but it was fun for a party!

Yay for being all moved! Doesn’t it feel great when everything is done! So happy you are done your 50 page paper, no offense to your paper, but that just sounds AWFUL haha. Oh my goodness! Squirrels in your house?! I would be frightened! You kind of have me craving a cream loaded cappuccino. I bet your right that it tastes MUCH better. And just think its less processed too ;) I also love pastel nails, adorable! And I happen to like your colour blocking, you look so festive! hehe. How about I just say I love everything in this post haha, seriously. I actually found boys are cleaner than the girls I lived with! It was odd.

    Love this post!
I had a guy friend live with me a while back. His room smelled!! Yuck! Unfortunately, I don’t have too much advice for you. But I am sure it will be a blast.
I love cappuccinos but also usually order with skim. I will be trying whole milk next time!!
And I LOVE the color blocking! :)

  • Jillian @ sprinkle massacre

Starbucks happy hour is awesome! I cant help but grab one if I pass by around that time! I’ve also been meaning to try TJ’s hummus dressing! Next time I’m there I am definitely getting it!

LOVE the pink and red combo! Adorable!!
