What I’m Loving Wednesday

by Sara on March 28, 2012

Hey hey, happy Wednesday!

I hope you’re all having a fantastic week! The past few days have been pretty wonderful over here because my mom and her manfriend, Dave, are visiting me and my brother in Washington, DC. :-)

Monday night dinner at Agora with Dave, my mom, my brother and two of my best friends, Neal and Elaina

Our time together has been spent doing what we do best: eating, shopping,  cafeinating, cooking, shopping, eating and eating some more. ;-)

We’ve been on-the-go nonstop, but I wanted to pop in and let you all know that you haven’t been forgotten! Whenever I have a free moment, I try to read blogs, but please don’t take it personally if I haven’t said hi lately; I’ll be playing catch-up tonight and through the weekend! :)

School is absolutely crazy right now as well, but I refuse to let it keep me from enjoying the simple pleasures in life.

Because it’s all about enjoying the simple pleasures, right? ;)

So, without further adieu, this is what I’m loving, drinking, wearing, searching for, wondering and reading right now.

Enjoy!

1. What I’m Drinking: Coconut Milk (from a can)

On Sunday night, my family gathered around the TV for the season premiere of Mad Men!

You can’t watch smooth-talking men knock back cocktails without enjoying one or two of your own. ;-)

Even though I’m not a big drinker, I do love a good Pina Colada. The only problem with this sweet creamy cocktail is that it’s usually loaded with not-so-good for you ingredients.

I made Skinny Pina Coladas for everyone by blending equal parts light coconut milk, coconut rum and pineapple juice with ice.

The next day, after a tough workout, I found the leftover coconut milk in the fridge and decided to throw it into a smoothie.

I had no patience to make it look pretty ;)

My Coconut Cream Protein Smoothie contained 1/2 frozen banana, 1/4 cup light coconut milk, 1/4 cup vanilla almond milk, 1 scoop MRM vanilla protein powder, and a handful of ice.

Bliss.

If you haven’t tried coconut milk (from a can–not the carton stuff!) in your smoothies, do it RIGHT NOW. It makes them SO creamy and satisfying. :)

What I’m Wearing: Tangerine Orange

I can’t get enough of this color!

Not only am I wearing it on my nails, but I’m also now the proud owner of tangerine pants, sweaters, shoes and dresses.

You can’t have too much of a good thing, right? ;)

What I’m On The Lookout For: Almond Plus and Luna Fiber Bars

I can’t remember why I was perusing the So Delicious website the other night (oh yeah, maybe because I’m on a coconut milk jag?), but I came across a new product:

 So Delicious Unsweetened Almond Plus

Even though I’m  a loyal Silk drinker, I’ll definitely be grabbing a carton of  this once I find it in the grocery store. Almond Plus contains five times more protein than other almond milks. I’ll take it. :)

If you’ve tried Almond Plus, please let me know what you think!

And get this: apparently Luna will soon be debuting fiber bars!

They’ll be available in three flavors: Vanilla Blueberry, Peanut Butter Strawberry and Chocolate Raspberry.

I love Luna’s, but one qualm I have is that they don’t keep me full very long. The new fiber bars supposedly contain 7 grams of fiber, compared to three in the classic bar.

What I’m Wondering: How long is the floral pant trend going to last?

[source]

Hot trend or old lady tapestry? ;)

I think they’re cute, but whenever I try on a pair, they just don’t look right.

What I’m Reading: The Paleo Diet for Athletes

[source]

I picked up a copy of this book because I’ve been working on a research paper about the Paleo Diet, and particularly how it pertains to fitness.  Like floral pants, “going Paleo” seems to be all the rage, especially amongst healthy-living bloggers. It’s quite an intriguing read! I’ll tell you my thoughts next time. ;)

HUGS!! xoxo

Questions for you:

Are there any other Mad Men/pina colada lovers out there? What’s your favorite cocktail?

What colors/trends are you loving right now?

Have you heard of the Paleo Diet?

  • http://www.drewsdclife.blogspot.com/ Andrea

My coworker has been trying to sell all of us on Paleo. It seems super intimidating, but a few people are giving it a shot to see if they like it! Curious to hear your thoughts as you read up!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Yeah, it’s all the rage! Are you going to try it? If so, I’d love to hear your thoughts too! <3

  • http://www.hungrymeetshealthy.com/ Christina

i LOVE that color nail polish. i need to go buy it immediately. luna fiber bars!? are you kidding me?!~ HOLY HECK. ok, so i watched mad men for the first time when i was in nyc. loved it immediately. last night when i got home i found it on nextflix and watched the pilot episode. i woke up thinking omg i have to watch more tonight. already hooked!!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

I know, Mad Men is ADDICTING. I own the first four seasons and have probably watched each episode at least five times. xo

  • Julie

I can’t wait to hear your thoughts about the Paleo Diet…It really does seem like everyone is starting to eat that way. I’ve looked into it, but it seems a bit too extreme for me. Meat at every meal? Don’t think I could do it!

I love pretty much everything you’re loving right now! Tangerine orange is such a HOT color! I bet you loved Megan’s dress in the Mad Men premiere! And Luna fiber bars? Gimme gimme!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

I know, I can’t WAIT for the new Luna bars! There’s no information on their website yet, but they’re usually slow to update, even after their new bars have hit the stores.

The Paleo diet is a bit extreme, but you actually don’t have to eat meat at every meal. That said, it would be hard to follow the plan if you were vegetarian! :-p

I usually stick to wine, but I also enjoyed a cocktail while watching the Mad Men premiere – I think it’s like a requirement. I don’t know about the floral pants… I really want to get colored denim but I’m even a little afraid to go that bold!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

I’m afraid to go that bold too! I think my orange pants are daring enough…at least for now. ;)

  • Jillian @ sprinklemassacre.com

I can;t wait to hear your thoughts about that book. I need to read it! I’m still tempted to try paleo for a week or two just to see how I feel!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

It’s a really interesting read! I actually think there’s a lot of merit to the logic, but the diet is probably hard for most people to follow.

  • http://www.peaceloveandoats.com/ Katie @ Peace Love & Oats

Those pina colada drinks look ridiculously delicious!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Thanks! They are! They make a nice study companion. ;)

  • http://funfoodandfreeweights.wordpress.com/ Alexandra

I cannot WAIT for those luna fiber bars either! :D And that orange polish is beyond amazing, perfect for spring!
Hope you have a great one!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Thanks, girl! Bright nails are so much fun for the warmer weather! xo

  • http://www.healthydivaeats.com/ Katie

HI LOVE!!!!! I love you and screaming it!!

Love SO much in this post! The essie, the orange loving, the mom and manfriend time ( haha! ) the smoothie, and the luna’s! I can’t wait for them to come out either!!!!

I just got essie pink-a-boo and it is so cute!

Love ya girl! Happy Wednesday! <3

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Happy Wednesday to you too!! Haha, I know, my mom insists that I refer to him as her “manfriend, ” because apparently “boyfriend” is for highschoolers. :-p Lol.

Let’s chat soon and plan your trip to DC! xoxo <3

  • http://healthifulbalance.blogspot.de/ Shannon (Healthiful Balance)

I’m glad you’re having a nice time with family and friends! :) Your protein smoothie sounds sooo good! I need to go get some coconut milk ASAP!
Thats great that LUNA is coming out with some fiber bars! I’ve noticed that the regular ones dont keep me full as long as other bars.. (I still really really love LUNA bars though, they’re awesome!!)

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Let me know if you try the coconut milk in a smoothie! I think you’re going to love it!

  • http://www.myfoodnfitnessdiaries.com/ Ash@MyFNFDiaries

i LOVE pina coladas!! i definitely need to try out your “skinny pina colada” and that coconut smoothie sounds so yummy too.
i’m not a huge fan of the floral pants. a little too “much” for my taste. i HAVE been eyeing all the bright and bold skinny jeans out there lately though. i think they’re so cute for spring and summer!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Yes, I’m loving the bright and bold skinny jeans too! In fact, today I’m wearing my orange pair for the first time! :)

  • http://www.sweatlikeapig.com/ Tara @ Sweat like a Pig

I am NOT a fan of the floral pants! They have been the rage in Australia for a good six months now. They are sooo not flattering unless you are built like a coathanger. Haha.

DON’T drink light coconut milk, Sara!! All the healthy fats that are in coconut milk are in the full fat version! And if you’re drinking that, don’t have it post-workout because you don’t want fat digestion to interfere with protein digestion :)

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Haha! So so true about the floral pants…very unforgiving! :-p

Okay okay, I’ll try the full fat coconut milk too. ;) But I’ll keep buying the light for post-workout, so I don’t interfere with the protein digestion. Win-win, right?! ;-) Love ya, girl! xo

  • http://glitzglamgranola.com/ Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola

Aww I hope you are having a wonderful time with your fam!! It sounds like you have all the right things on the agenda ;) I too LOVE Mad Men and your recipe for pina coladas! I’m going to have to make those asap! And I was JUST thinking that about floral pants- I love me some colored denim but I just don’t think I can get behind these- they feel a little too 80s? But I am loving that tangerine! I feel like it looks especially good on blondes so I think it’s your color! And I have heard of Paleo and think it’s kind of interesting- but I don’t eat eggs or much meat so it just wouldn’t work for me! Oh! And I can’t wait to find that almond milk and those LUNA bars- how awesome!!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

I think you nailed it: the floral pants are way too 1980′s! But as products of that era, maybe it means we’re the perfect candidates to rock them? Haha. Or not. :-p

  • http://thisitalianfamily.wordpress.com/ Rach

Ooh I will definitely have to try out that Almond Plus too! I am always up for trying a new almond milk. :) Also, I’ve made dairy free icecream using coconut milk so I can imagine just how creamy it would make a smoothie!

  • http://atalante.co/ JC

Just bookmarked your recipe. It sounds delicious!

I’m not the biggest fan of floral pants but that might be because I’m more of a solid colors kind of gal when it comes to apparel.

  • http://lifesabowl.com/ Life’s a Bowl

Haha, laughing out loud at your comment about the floral pants :P

I pinned a skinny pina colada recipe the other day, can’t wait to try it!

I am LOVING all of the neon colors- so bright and fun! J. Crew has a bunch of fun things out that I’ve been eying and I’m so happy with my recent sneaker purchase!

  • http://lisalately.com/ Lisa

Yes for simple pleasures! Like drinks on a Sunday!! I love Mad Men, I was so pumped for the premiere!! Those drinks look great! Totally trying them out!! My fave cocktail has to be a simple vodka on the rocks with lemon juice and stevia mixed in! coconut milk rocks in smoothies, so prefer that over almond milk! I looove that tangerine colour! Gorgeous, too bad I’m far too pale to wear that haha. Yah the floral pants are cute on some people, but I look like a weirdo in them, not for me! I’m interested on your thought with paleo, huge trend going on now-a-days. Have a great day!

  • Sally

Super great visit! I just wish DC was closer. I loved sipping our pina coladas while watching Mad Men! I’ll be interested in your thoughts on the Paleo diet. xo

  • http://vanillabeanlean.com/ Electra @ Vanilla Bean Lean

I’m looking forward to hearing your review on that book! I’ve wanted to read it for ages! I did paleo for almost a year and loved it, but I just lose too much muscle without at least a small amount of starchy carbs.

  • http://swankydietitian.com/ Kristen @ Swanky Dietitian

That pina colada looks delicious! I will be making this recipe come summer! :)
I started watching a bit of Mad Men with my sister the other day on Netflix. It’s a great show!
I am loving the floral trend but not sure if I could pull off the pants.
