Cherry Popping

by Sara on March 18, 2012

Did you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day yesterday? I completely forgot to pack green clothing in my suitcase, but I most definitely made up for it by eating and slurping green. ;)

I had no idea that Shamrock Shakes existed until I began reading blogs two years ago.

Apparently I’d been living under a rock. ;)

Yesterday, I finally crawled out from under, made my way to McDonald’s…

documenting the experience involves snapping 46327 pictures ;)

…and checked Shamrock Shake off the “must-do” list. :)

For the record: it really is as good as everyone says–a minty, creamy delight. :)

A to Z

Today I’ll be checking another item off of my “must-do” list.

The lovely Janetha created this A to Z survey a few weeks ago, and since I’ve never posted a survey on my blog , I think it’s time to pop that cherry. ;)

Enjoy!

A is for age: 26. They say the real fun begins in your 50′s, and I’m more than halfway there!  ;)

B is for breakfast today:

I love eggs in the morning! Today, for breakfast part one, I started with an omelet (egg beaters, garlic, green onion, pepper), Laughing Cow blue cheese wedge (spread on the omelet), sauteed spinach with Smart Balance flax “butter,” 1/2 cup pumpkin mixed with vanilla, cinnamon and stevia, and coffee...of course! No breakfast is complete without coffee. :-)

The butter on the spinach makes all the difference! I’m a huge fan of Smart Balance Light Flax spread!

This was breakfast part two:

Rice cake with peanut butter, banana and vanilla protein frosting (1/2 scoop MRM Whey–my new favorite protein powder!–mixed with a touch of water). Rice cakes are so underrated. I love the crunch!

C is for currently craving: SUNSHINE! It’s been raining all week in Boise, but the sun did poke it’s head through the clouds for a few minutes yesterday. Where are you, spring?

As for a food craving, I could totally go for the Ahi Capraccio I ate at the Cheesecake Factory the other night.

This was truly one of the best restaurant dishes I’ve had in a long time. And it came from a chain restaurant. Gulp. If you’re near a Cheesecake Factory (and you love ahi tuna like me), go get in on the action. Now.

D is for dinner tonight: I’m going out again tonight (the perks of being home!), so what I’ll be eating is TBD. I can share last night’s dinner though!  I’m not a fan of traditional Irish food (corn beef and cabbage? no thanks!),  But I sure do love my greens.

[source]

I was pretty full after gulping down that Shamrock Shake, so savory Spinach-Feta Turkey Burgers made a perfect light dinner. Recipe coming soon!

E is for favorite type of exercise: I like almost any activity that makes my heart pump! If we’re talking cardio benefits, I’ll go with running (solely for the feeling afterwards though!). But for FUN ? DANCING. Hands down. Nothing makes me happier!

F is for an irrational fear: Throwing up. It’s been a major fear of mine my entire life. When I was little, I used to keep a bowl by my bed just in case I got sick! :-p

G is for gross food: Dried apricots. No food–NO food–turns me off more! There’s a long story behind it (that involves my irrational fear), but I’ll spare you the details. ;)

H is for hometown: I claim three! Irvine, California (Orange County), Burlingame, California (outside San Francisco) and Boise, Idaho (I’m visiting right now). :)

I is for something important: My family and my faith. Both offer unconditional love and support!

J is for current favorite jam: Don’t laugh, but I was listening to Boyz II Men while lifting weights yesterday! So at this very moment, I guess my favorite song is “I’ll Make Love to You.”

Kidding. Kind of. ;)

K is for kids: Other than this silly pup…

…No kids yet! But I sure hope I’ll have a few someday. :)

L is for current location: My mom’s house in Boise :)

M is for the most recent way you spent money: I just ordered these pants online.

[source]

I’ve been searching for orange pants for weeks, and finally found a pair! :)

N is for something you need: HUGS. They’re more comforting than a million wise words. :) I try to give one (and get one) every day. :-)

O is for occupation: Graduate student. Only one and a half semesters left! If you know of any job openings in the health promotion field, let me know!

P is for pet peeve: It takes a lot to irritate me, so I don’t have many pet peeves, but one thing I really can’t stand is passive aggressiveness. I’m not afraid to call people out on it.

Q is for a quote: I have an entire quote book full of quotes that I love and live by. This is just one of my favorites:

R is for random fact about you: Remember how I said I love to dance? Well, I’ll dance anywhere and everywhere, and that most certainly includes bar counters. I’ve won three bar counter-dancing competitions…sober!

S is for favorite healthy snack: It’s hard to choose, but the healthy snack I eat most often is my bedtime snack, which I’ve gushed about way too many times.

Whipped cottage cheese sweetened with stevia, peanut butter, Udi’s granola and flax. Love it.

T is for favorite treat: Frozen yogurt. I worked at TCBY in high school, and even though I was paid minimum wage, I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to top the job perks: unlimited free froyo samples!

If I want something truly decadent, I’ll go for a slice of cheesecake.

U is for something that makes you unique: This is going to sound kinky…

I LOVE having my feet tickled.

V is for favorite vegetable:

[click here for 12 great Brussels sprouts recipes!]

I truly like all vegetables! But those that make me weak in the knees include: spinach (sauteed with garlic), Brussels sprouts (roasted), butternut squash (roasted), mushrooms (sauteed or stuffed with cheese) and eggplant (grilled with olive oil). I can’t pick a favorite, but I probably eat the most spinach!

W is for today’s workout: Day 42 of LiveFit Trainer–REST! I’ll probably take Cali for a walk, to stretch out my sore muscles. :)

Update about my experience with LiveFit coming soon.

X is for X-rays you’ve had: Besides the regular dental X-rays, I’ve had two taken of my pelvis after two separate running-induced pelvic fractures. I’ve never felt more pain. :(

Y is for yesterday’s highlight: I have two. The first was catching up with Meg while getting a pedicure! (We ended up not being able to meet on Tuesday, like I said in my last post). I needed that pedicure so bad.

AND….

…Interviewing for an internship at the YMCA. I’ll (hopefully) be working on healthy eating and exercise campaigns targeted at youth and Latino communities in Boise this summer. So excited! :-)

Z is for your time zone: Usually EST, but right now I’m in MST (Mountain Standard)

******

So there ya have it: my first blog survey! If you’re a blogger and you haven’t already done this, please do! I love learning more about everyone!

Questions for you:

Feel free to answer any of the questions in the survey, or answer these:

B is for breakfast today. What did you eat?

S is for healthy snack. What’s your favorite?

AND

Did you eat, make or wear anything green for St. Patrick’s Day?

it was so fun learning more about you! i still have never tried a shamrock shake… i should change that asap. ;)
B (breakfast today) – overnight oats with a sliced banana and peanut butter on top!
S (healthy snack) – i’ve actually been loving your whipped cottage cheese w/ PB mixture lately too! i go in phases, but a snack that will always be my favorite is a banana with peanut butter. i’ll never get sick of that!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

I will never get tired of a banana and peanut butter either! It’s truly the BEST combination! And you should definitely rush to McDonald’s and get yourself a Shamrock Shake before they’re gone! ;-)

  • http://lifesabowl.com/ Life’s a Bowl

Before reading the caption under your bfast pic, I thought you had sauteed spinach with a LC wedge- that sounds like a good combo! I didn’t have anything specifically St. Patty’s themed but I did consume a few green things!

B: Bfast this morning included strawberries, Italian eggs, and dark chocolate brancakes topped with PB Greek yogurt [and raisins] :D

S: One of my most common snacks is popcorn!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Ooh, melting a LC wedge in spinach would be awesome! I’ll have to try that! How do you make your chocolate bran cakes? They sound yummy!

  • Meg @ ADashofmeg

Good luck with the internship! I had a bagel this morning – from Vermont! There are no places for good bagel where I live in NH so when someone brings me good bagels from elsewhere, I eat them quickly :)

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Thanks, girl! So true about bagels…DC is seriously lacking in that department too! xoxo

Cute survey – I loved learning more about you!
B: I had scrambled eggs, hash browns, baked beans, tomato, two pieces of toast and a chocolate croissant for breakfast! I don’t normally eat that much but I was carb loading for the day, haha!
My favourite healthy snack is your peanut butter cups!! I’m an ADDICT!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Your breakfast sounds fabulous–and so stereotypically English! Love it! I need to make those peanut butter cups again….it’s been way too long!

      LOVED your post today! <3

  • http://www.stuftmama.com/ Kristin

LOVED THIS!! The orange pants are SO cute…I’ve been searching for a pair myself, but it seems like every store is sold out. I guess it’s because Kate Middleton was spotted wearing them last week!

You’ve won bar dancing competitions?! You rock, girl! And I’d love that spinach-feta turkey burger recipe! Post soon please? ;)

I had overnight oats with peanut butter, chia seeds, flax and cocoa powder for breakfast this morning. So yum.

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

When I saw that Kate Middleton had worn orange pants my heart sank a little because I knew that everybody would be going out to buy a pair! Almost every store is sold out now! I’ll try to post the turkey burger recipe next week!

  • Sally

Love your survey! Breakfast for me was a hard boiled egg, Barbara’s Shredded Oats, and of course my coveted latte! The turkey burgers last night were out of this world! Definitely a “make again!”

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

I’ll make them when you visit me in DC! <3

  • Amy

i just tried a shamrock shake for the firs time too yesterday! i just heard about them like, 2 yrs ago..i thought they were an east coast mcdonalds thing but apparently not? hah it was pretty damn good though!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Pretty damn good is a great way to describe it! :-D

  • http://www.cottercrunch.com lindsay cotter

i love “I” and i am still waiting for that quote book to be published. ;-)

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

      Now that you’ve published a Healthy Bites e-book, I better get on it, shouldn’t I? ;-)

  • http://lisalately.com/ Lisa

I’ve never had the shamrock shake…not too sure about it…for some reason the milkshakes don’t appeal to me at all! I’m a weirdo…I wasn’t very festive this year at all…favourite snack I’d have to say is a protein muffin :)

  • http://www.hungrymeetshealthy.com/ Christina

That rice cake looks amazing, as does the ahi tuna. Like woah. Dancing is definitely the best and most fun form of exercise. Especially when it’s with a huge group of your best girlfriends! Brussels sprouts are one of my favorites too! And thank youuuuuuuu for spelling it correctly. XOOX

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Haha! I should have added misspelled veggies to the “pet peeves” category! <3

  • http://fooood4theheart.wordpress.com/ Lauren

I am going to make a smoothie for (B) breakfast!!
My favorite (S) snack would have to be.. a thinkthin bar weirdly!!
I wore a green shirt for St. Patty’s day!! :P

I will have to get on that.. and do the survey soon!!

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

I love Think Thin bars, but sadly they upset my stomach! Have you tried the new fruit and nut ones?

Yes, please do the survey! I’d love to see your answers! <3

  • Allison

Just curious why you eat fake eggs and butter instead of the real deal?

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Hey girl–I eat both! I especially LOVE hard boiled eggs–with yolk–with guacamole and mayo! May sound a bit yucky to some, but I think it’s delicious! I like to use egg beaters (which are egg whites with added viitamins) and non-fortified liquid egg whites because I eat them so frequently…If I didn’t, I’d be consuming 5-6 yolks on a daily basis (most dietitians recommend 1-2). Plus, they’re super convenient (no worrying about cracking and getting shell in your omelet, haha). Hope that answers your question! :-)

  • http://lifeisbetterthanfiction.wordpress.com/ Meg

Oh girl! You’re gonna rock those orange pants! I love hugs! I think it’s been studied what a hug a day does for your mental health!

I did wear a little green for st patricks day, but that’s about it. Oh! I had a green/brown (from chocolate protein powder) green smoothie. That counts.

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

I’ve read those hug studies too! And yes, a green smoothie TOTALLY counts. ;-) xoxo <3

  • http://glitzglamgranola.com/ Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola

Omigosh I’ve never had a Shamrock shake and only recently heard about them too! But minty ice cream is delicious so I’m sure the shake is too! Loved reading this survey all about you! I too am craving sunshine- it’s been cold and rainy in SF and I’m ready for the sun to come back! And your orange pants are too cute!! You are going to rock those! I love colored jeans! I’m officially impressed with you winning 3 bar dancing competitions!! You’ve got moves!! :) And you are so right about hugs- they really do make such a difference! Oh and congrats on your interview!! That sounds like an awesome position and way to make such a positive difference in the community!

  • http://swankydietitian.com/ Kristen @ Swanky Dietitian

Love this list!! I am with you on dancing! I will just bust out some moves around the house at any given moment.
For breakfast, I had eggs with whole wheat toast and a few strawberries. Mondays I am off work so I have a bit more time to prep.

  • Katie

Oooh I wish we had Cheesecake Factory! I’ve only been once, but I remember a salad I really liked… and that tuna looks so good!

I had a sweet potato (with fixins) for breakfast today.

    • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Thanks for the breakfast inspiration. :) When I read your comment on my phone in bed this morning, I thought, “hmm, that sounds really good!” I’m enjoying a sweet potato hash right now. :)
