Peanut Butter-Nutella Cookies and Moderation

by Sara on December 22, 2011

I’ve heard there’s a secret to maintaining balance during the holidays.

Apparently it’s really easy.

All you have to do is follow one rule: enjoy everything in moderation.

Even Fitness Magazine, Jillian Michaels and Weight Watchers say it’s true. ;-)

So a few days ago, I decided to heed their advice and bring back a long lost love.

If I’m going to enjoy everything this Christmas, this smooth chocolate delight is most definitely going to be included!

Added bonus: it’s easily incorporated into a moderate and balanced diet! ;-)

See below.

(Hehe).

“When used in moderation with complementary foods, Nutella® can form a part of a balanced meal. It is a quick and easy way to encourage kids to eat whole grains, such as whole wheat toast, English muffins, toaster waffles and bagels.”

                                     -Nutella website

source (p.s. a woman filed a lawsuit filed against Nutella for making false “health” claims!)

It’s also a quick and delicious way to encourage everyone to eat…COOKIES! ;-)

When paired with it’s equally tempting sidekick, peanut butter, Nutella is moderation’s temptress.

You’ve been warned. ;-)

***Peanut Butter-Nutella Thumbrint Cookies**

1 cup creamy peanut butter

1 cup sugar**

1 egg

1 t. baking powder

1 small jar Nutella

chopped peanuts or hazelnuts (optional)

sea salt (optional)

1. Mix peanut butter, sugar, baking powder and egg in a bowl. Use hands to roll dough into about 30 balls.

2. Roll each ball in sugar (if desired) and place on a baking sheet.

3. Using your thumb, press a large, deep indentation into the cookie ball.

4. Bake at 350 degrees for about 8 minutes; cool on a rack.

5. Once cooled, fill cookies with Nutella and top with chopped peanuts or sea salt.

**you can substitute Splenda or Truvia, but the cookies will be slightly more clumbly

ENJOY!!!

When goodies like this are lying around, it’s really tough to abide by the “enjoy in moderation” mantra.

Believe me, I know. :-)

But that’s okay. Because this year I’m kissing all rules goodbye.

Including the moderation rule.

(And I think you should too.)

Does this mean I’m going to gorge on 10 cookies in one afternoon? Probably not. But I’ll do my best to not think about the “right amount” or the correct serving size. I believe that many of the unhealthy relationships Americans have with food are rooted in the fact that we relentlessly try to live by food rules. This creates anxiety and confusion, which ultimately makes eating less enjoyable!

Coconut milk ice cream: I end breakfast with dessert when I feel like it (most mornings!)

What is moderation is anyways? Could it be that its different for each of us? Or that what may be moderate one day, might not feel moderate a few days later?

It’s all so confusing!

That’s why I think the best approach is this: eat what you love, love what you eat, and TRUST that your body will tell you what, when and how much.

I mean, I love Jillian…and fitness magazines have great tips, but do they really know us better than we know ourselves?

**LOVE to you all! Merry Christmas!**

I may be back before the 25th, but if not, have a joyous holiday!

“We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup!”

(name that movie)

;-)

What’s your favorite way to eat Nutella?

Favorite Christmas cookie?

Do you live by your own “food rules?”  Is anything off-limits? What does “moderation” mean to you?

What a fantastic idea! The PB cookies with the Hershey kisses in the center are my favorite classic cookie, so this is such a fun twist on it. I also love your lipstick in that pic where you’re kissing the Nutella jar!

I think this post was written for me! I’ve been struggling a bit with food rules lately, and really like your approach to forgetting about moderation. Living by rules (even that one!) only confuses us!

Your cookies look INCREDIBLE!! I need to make these (and not worry about eating them in moderation.) Haha. Merry Christmas, Sara!

  • Debbie (Accidently Delish)

i agree and disagree with the moderation concept. i mean yes indulge and enjoy, but i also don’t think you should limit. i mean. i know peanut butter seems so scary to people because of the fat, but remember it’s good fats. and should you eat a whole jar? no. but i think if you want peanut butter everyday. ok that’s fine. sometimes i find myself still saying ok i can only have peanut butter twice a week. or once a day. but the reality. you wont gain weight from eating peanut butter everyday. and limiting yourself and “moderating” i feel makes it less enjoyable, because you’re just thinking about how your “indulging” just eat what you want. (easier said than done) i hope that even makes sense. haha.

why are there eating rules? only in the America I tell you. look at other countries and i guarantee you they do not have “food rules” it’s ridiculous. food is food to your body. and regardless of what you eat when it’s had what it needs, it’ll let you know.

I just eat what I want and when I want, you know how I roll, I just listen to my body and it works for me! I think peeps get too obsessed over food, its scary :/

I love you and that pic, how cute you look!!! Loving the cookies too, I will take a dozen please!!!

Love you! Merry Christmas to you and your family! <3

Haha, thanks! I can’t remember what I was wearing there, but I think it was Revlon “Fuschia” #030 with clear gloss on top! I tend to mix lipstick/glosses to get the color I want. :)

  • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Yes, try them and *enjoy* them!! <3

What a wonderful post! I agree- the world makes eating too confusing! We are humans, we need food, it should taste good. Simple. I love your post and I am going to try and work on the same out look…. and make those cookies ASAP.
    YUM!

  • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

I COMPLETELY agree, Debbie! Only in America do we have these crazy rules, and only in America do we have such problems with obesity and eating disorders. There’s a strong connection between the two, and that’s why I think we need to throw them out the window!

  • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Love you too!!! I know, I love your food philosophy! We should all follow your lead, Katie! Merry Christmas to everyone in Pittsburgh too! Muah!

  • Gina

Elf!! That’s the movie :) those cookies look divine! I’m doing the baking for Christmas and know I’ll be licking quite a few beaters and quality controlling the goodies right from the oven. But tis the season! Life is too short not to enjoy sweets!

Love you xoxo and merry Christmas :)

Oh my gosh, those cookies look amazing!! I recently remembered my love for Nutella when I saw it as an option at La Boulange to put on toast… um amazing. These look perfect for the holidays too! I like all different Christmas cookie, but one of my favorites is my Grandma’s Brown Sugar cookies– they’ve been in the family for years and are amazing! And what a great post about rules and moderation. I look at moderation loosely- I let myself eat what I want most of the time but try not to go overboard because of that. I find that it’s when I tell myself that I can’t have something that all I want to do is have it and consequently overeat. Going in knowing I can have it takes the pressure off and let’s me enjoy food!

  • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

‘Tis the season! So true! Time to enjoy! Love you too! xoxo

  • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

I love that approach, and think it’s definitely the best way to eat “moderately.” I’m the same way about telling myself I can’t have something…The more I say no, the more I want it, and the more of it I eat later!

  • http://www.healthyandsane.com/ Elina (Healthy and Sane)

If only moderation was easy… especially with delicious treats like peanut butter nutella cookies! Those commercials have been annoying me too. I’m sort of glad that woman sued them. Nutella is not healthy. Ok in moderation (just like anything is) but not healthy.

  • http://chicmeetshealthy.blogspot.com/ Cara @ Chic Meets Healthy

mmmmm i saw alyssa and shanna raving about these on twitter!! have you tried putting nutella in the middle of crescent rolls then roll it up and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar! so good when its warm and melty! i made it last year for my work’s holiday party.

Merry almost Christmas Love! I’m thankful to have you in my life!! xoxo

  • http://flopoodle.com/ Flopoodle

I recently discovered the joys of including nutella in baking! I made nutella brownies and they were to die for, but they were certainly not as pretty to look at as these cookies!

    Happy Holidays Sara!

  • http://sweatlikeapig.com/ Tara @ Sweat like a Pig

WOW! Thank you for posting this. I’m going to the grocery store today and I smell some of these cookies in my future ;) Hope you have a great Christmas!

  • Shawn

I love nutella! What a fun cookie!

  • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Haha, yeah, I definitely agree that Nutella shouldn’t be classified as a “health food.” Consumers need to be more careful about the decisions they make too!

  • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Oh. my. gosh. Nutella in crescent rolls sounds AMAZING! Love that idea! I’m thankful to have you in my life too! Merry Christmas to you and your family! xoxo

  • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Nutella brownies do sound to-die-for! Did you post about them? I hope so, because I’m about to skip on over to your blog to search for the recipe! xoxo

  • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara Stewart

Yay! Let me know how they turn out! Merry Christmas, Tara!

ELF!! Of course I can name that movie – love it! ;)

    Merry Christmas, lady!

  • http://healthifulbalance.blogspot.com/ Shannon (Healthiful Balance)

Peanut butter and nutella cookies? AWESOME! :)
Moderation to me means, that I eat what I like but dont overdo it. :)

  • http://salmonandsandwiches.wordpress.com/ Shelley

Sara- the cookies look amazing and I love your topic of moderation during the holidays. The “rules” I try to follow are to eat when I am hungry and stop before uncomfortable fullness. I try to let myself eat what I want when I do get hungry- otherwise I usually just end up eating that item later and in larger amounts! It’s funny how it works, because the more intuitive I am with my eating, the less time I spend stressing about it or even thinking about food! I end up making a lot of healthier choices by just giving my body what it wants when it wants it. Long winded answer, but hopefully you know what I mean :) Thanks for the post and merry Christmas! <3

I have never tried Nutella [even when I visited Italy and it appeared every morning on the breakfast array]! I guess I’m totally missing out :P

Love this quote “eat what you love, love what you eat, and TRUST that your body will tell you what, when and how much”!
