Five Fun Foodie Finds

by Sara on September 2, 2011

So you claim that you really love peanut butter, but would you sink your teeth into this?

People Magazine feature

As Americans fire up the grills and down millions of ballpark franks this Labor Day weekend, Po Dog in Seattle will be churning out hot dogs topped with crunchy peanut butter, bananas and roasted peanuts.

Heck, they might as well throw some jelly on top too! :-p

I first became addicted to the Annie Chun’s variety, then I discovered I could snag virtually the same snack for $1 less at Trader Joe’s. However, my latest seaweed find, Sea Snax, is even more exciting because it comes in not one, not two, but THREE flavors: Spicy Chipotle, Toasty Onion and Olive. All three are quite addictive!

My beloved Luna’s scored top prize for “Best Tasting” in’sĀ  survey.

Not a surprise! As a self-proclaimed bar fiend, I think I’ve tried every single variety on the market (not kidding–whenever I spot a new one, I buy it!). Several years after it’s debut, White Chocolate Macadamia remains my favorite.

How did your favorite bars measure up?

Hint: Best CHOCOLATE nutrition bar award goes to Pure Organic Chocolate Brownie–one of my latest obsessions. Yay!

I’m in love with Food Friends, and I think Jenn may find this particular card endearing.

And speaking of birthdays, my dear friend Elaina is celebrating her 24th today!Ā  Happy Birthday, Lain!

Is it just me, or do these mushrooms look insanely delicious? Okay, it’s just me.

In yet another feature, these 28 unattractive eats are highly recommended for nutrient-packed noshing.

My five picks from the list:

1. Ginger: improves digestion and reduces inflammation

2. Mushrooms: great source of B Vitamins and Vitamin D

3. Kefir: offers a probiotic punch (probiotics aid in digestion!)

4. Black Garlic: double the antioxidants of raw garlic!

5. Seaweed! (you already know this): removes residue of radiation in the body, improves water metabolism, is a lymphatic cleanser, and strengthens the thyroid (AAAAND it tastes so good!)

***Have a safe, happy Labor Day weekend!***

Tonight I’m finally seeing The Help, tomorrow I’m watching FOOTBALL with friends, Sunday I’m hitting up a barbecue and several DC museums, and Monday I’ll be prepping for the first day of my internship at the USDA (!!).

Questions for you:

1. Would you eat the PB Dog at Po Dog? Even just ONE bite?

I’ll try anything once! But I’m only committing to one bite.

2. What’s your favorite energy bar?

3. Which “ugly” foods do you love? Which do you find off-putting?

  • Natalie

Oh my gosh, that hot dog is TOO MUCH!! I love peanut butter, but I prefer to keep it separate from my meat, thankyouverymuch! I think I’d love the peanut butter, peanuts and bananas on the bun though!

Where did you find those seaweed snacks? I can only find the Annie Chun’s flavors!

Super cute card too! Happy birthday to Elaina! And I agree–those mushrooms look reeeally good.

    • Sara Stewart

Agreed about keeping PB away from meat! Unless it’s in a peanut sauce, in which case it’s pretty tasty on chicken!

I found the seaweed snacks at Whole Foods, but I bet you can get them online too.

  • Julie

Girl, I’ll eat a hot dog if you join me! Haha I’ll try anything once too, as long as it’s not raw meat.

Luna bars are so good, and I also love that brownie bar. I was surprised to see that Think Thin bars get a bad rating!

Seaweed is my favorite ugly food!

    • Sara Stewart

Ok, let’s fly to Seattle and try one together! I was surprised about the Think Thin Bars too–but they contain maltitol, which is an artificial sweetener, so I guess that’s why!

  • Amanda @ .running with spoons.

I’d definitely try the hot dog! (but with AB instead of PB). I’ve been known to eat some pretty crazy food combos, so I’m willing to try almost anything to see if it goes well together šŸ˜€ Sometimes you’d be surprised just how good something tastes that seemingly doesn’t fit.

As for the poor ugly foods… I love ginger, mushrooms, kefir, prunes, and okra… but I will NOT touch sardines, oysters, fishes, or liver. Eeeee just thinking about it gives me the heebie jeebies. I don’t care how good it’s supposed to be for you lol. Some things I won’t do in the name of health.

Hope you have a great weekend, hun! Have an awesome time at The Help! I really liked it šŸ˜€

    • Sara Stewart

I agree, especially about sardines and liver! I can get those nutrients elsewhere! :-)

  • Meg Bailey

I’m pretty sure I’d eat a hot dog with just about anything on it!

I LOVE mushrooms, but I’m not so sure about seaweed!

    • Sara Stewart

Meg, you HAVE to try seaweed snacks! They are SO good! I promise you’ll love ’em. Plus, you already eat seaweed in sushi! xoxo

  • lindsay cotter

totally bought those seaweed snacks at costco. I eat them like candy corn. addicting. I just wonder if my breath smells like the ocean. hehe.

    • Sara Stewart

They sell them at Costco?! I need to go now!

      • lindsay cotter

yes, costco in bulk! i was in heaven!

  • Peasandcrayons

Dude. Id soooo dig in! The shrooms r beautimous

  • Gina

I would totally eat the PB dog minus the hot dog with extra PB šŸ˜‰

No but I might try a bite of it. You only live once, right?
    Go big or go home!

Hahaha, I must try those seaweed snacks ASAP. SO I totally didn’t know regular Luna’s we re GF. I thought only the protein ones were! Good to know!

    • Sara Stewart

Luna bars contain oats, which means they can’t be labeled GF. Since oats don’t seem to bother me, I eat them regularly. However, they may contain trace amounts of gluten because they’re processed in a plant that also makes gluten-containing bars. :) Be careful if you’re really sensitive! xoxo

  • Rach

Nooo… PB + hotdog?! I don’t think so! Gross, haha!

  • Shanna, like Banana

Lentils are pretty ugly, but quite tasty. Same with most Indian food, but I love it! Or, since I’m on a roll, Mexican food too! Like refried beans!

    • Sara Stewart

Love me some refried beans! Especially with melted cheese on top!

  • Katie

The hot dog, not going to knock it, but I am not a hot dog eater, but if I was, I might be in love : )

Seaweed snacks, LOVE, I sometimes eat them in bed and its a mess, lol!

LOVE mushrooms, pretty much could eat JUST a bowl of mushrooms if they are seasoned right and yummy!

LOVE you the MOST out of any food in the world!!!

  • Soo @ Little Miss Fitness

hmmm…i wonder if the peanut butter po dog would just taste like a thai peanut sauce?! that’s what i would be thinking when i took one bite. :)

have a wonderful weekend! it sounds like you have so many fun things planned! dc museums sound like a blast! i could go for a little art or natural history! :)

  • Sally

Where can I find those Sea Snax?? I think I’d try the pb dog…but maybe only a bite or two. Are you wearing blue and gold today? Go Bears!!

  • Kristine @ Running on Hungry

    1. I’d try a bite, but that’s all I can committ too as well!!

    2. I LOVE Lunas (White Chocolate Mac, Vanilla Almond and Chocolate Covered Coconut) but lately I’m so into Kind Bars, Lara Bars and Pure Bars (Chocolate Brownie! Woo!)

    3. I love Kale Chips, Mushrooms and smoothies… which typically end up looking like sludge. But are SO tasty!

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!! :)

  • Stefanie @TheNewHealthy

Peanut butter on a hot dog? hmm, very odd! haha There’s a restaurant near me that serves cheeseburgers with peanut butter and mayonnaise. Supposedly they’re all the rage!

I actually think those mushrooms look delicious also!! :)

Have a wonderful labor day weekend love! xoxo

  • Jackie

I am not too sure about a Peanut butter hot dog but I am always game to try at least a bite. It certainly sounds interesting.
I have never heard of black garlic. I will have to check this out.

  • Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun

White Choc Mac Luna is my all time favorite bar too!

And pb hot dog? Just…no! LOL

  • Allison

I love #’s 3, 4, and 5 šŸ˜€ Luna [white chocolate macadamia nut, chocolate dipped coconut, peanut butter cookie, chocolate peppermint stick, or iced oatmeal raisin] or Clif Mojo bars are my go-to’s! I def need to check out Food Friends- thanks for sharing! And totes agree that ugly foods are still just as tasty as pretty ones :)

  • Dawn Robinson

A peanut butter hotdog?!?? I don’t think I could eat that on my own….maybe if it was a bet or peer pressure….maybe….

  • katie

OH my gosh that is crazy about the PB hot dog! Haha i dk if id do that.. thats BOLD!!!!!! Id prob be sick! LOVE YOU GIRL!

  • Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola

I read that article in People too! I don’t eat hot dogs so that part sounds so unappealing! And I’ve never tried seaweed snacks before! To be honest, I’m a little nervous but maybe I’ll have to venture and give them a try! I love Lara bars, Think Thin (which I was shocked rated so badly) and Clif Mojo bars!

  • Kathryn @ Flopoodle

I love mushy grilled bananas, which really do look disgusting. I think most leftovers are pretty visually unappealing, too, but they usually taste ok :)

  • Courtney

I LOVE the White Chocolate Macadamia bars also – the peppermint and coconut ones are delish as well! :)

I hope you had a LOVELY holiday weekend!!

  • Dilek y Alba

I like larabars the best!! I feel like they are the most natural out of all of the bars. All the other ones seem to contain somewhat of synthetic proteins and what not. Go larabars!! :)

  • LivingLindsay

Hmmm…Not sure about that hot dog. I think I would try it, just so I could say that I did, but I’m not sure I would like it. :) My fave bars lately are Kind bars. Especially the Almond Coconut. So good!!
