Home is Where the Food Is

by Sara on June 28, 2011

Hi friends!

I knoooow. I’ve been extremely MIA lately. In the midst of my excitement about last post’s KIND bar/Gotein giveaway, I somehow forgot to mention that I was taking a trip home.

Berkeley-california

Even though I now live in Washington, DC, my heart will always belong to the San Francisco Bay Area!

The first three nights of my trip, my family and I stayed at a boutiquey hotel.

Translation, “boutiquey”: no TV or internet access in the room. Aka not good conditions for a blogger. :-/

However, even though I felt disconnected from you all, in retrospect it was refreshing to unplug for awhile. Very limited access to blogs and Twitter allowed me to connect more personally with family and friends. That said, I’m so happy to be back, and am excited share what I’ve been up to the past four days. (Bloggers: I promise I’ll be catching up on all your lives this week as well!)

Okay, ready to see the good stuff? :-)

As you may know, hundreds of innovative food companies and foodies call the San Francisco Bay Area “home,” just as I do. :-)

I had the opportunity to sample so many delicious locally-made goodies on this trip! WAY too many to share in this post, so be expecting recaps this week.

I spent the weekend in Berkeley–my childhood homecelebrating the life of my grandma with my family. You may remember that she passed away last spring, and that when she died, I comforted myself by baking her fudge pie, Heath crunch cake and meringues.

On Saturday we had a memorial serice in her memory. I thought it would be a neat idea to print some of my grandma’s most well-known recipes on cards so that guests could carry on her culinary tradition in their own kitchens.

Aren’t Grandma’s recipes always best?!

The memorial service was truly beautiful. People from all over the world cmae and shared their memories of her with my family.

And we feasted quite nicely too. Just as Grandma would have wanted. :-)

See’s chocolates, her favorite, were obviously mandatory. ;-)

Remember in my last post I mentioned that I’d been eating out quite frequently? Well, this week hasn’t been any different.

That’s the nature of traveling, right? When you’re on the road, sometimes meals look like this:

And sometimes they look like this:

IMG_1577

The picture above is documentation of the “oh no I slept too late and missed the complimentary breakfast” hotel room breakfast. :-) Yeah, I was definitely feeling some fruit overload after that one.

Sometimes nighttime snacks look like this.

Photo, jpegI eat cottage cheese, peanut butter and granola (this was 18 Rabbits Pecan, Almond and Maple) almost every night at home, and find that maintaining that consistency when I travel is a nice way to balance out rich meals

And sometimes they look like this.

Last nightI scrapped consistency and enjoyed this treat from Mariposa Bakery before bed. There are no more words. :-)

And now…the winner of that giveaway!

My brother is lying on the hotel bed next to me as I type this post, so I asked him to pick a number between 1 and 77.

His choice?

53.

That means that the winner is Amanda at Running With Spoons!

Congrats, Amanda! Please e-mail me your contact info and I’ll put your KIND bars and Gotein protein powder in the mail!

I truly love you all SO SO SO SO much! Thank you for encouraging and inspiring me each and every day.

Do you seek out “consistency comfort” foods while traveling? Or do you prefer to wing it and eat whatever you stumble across?

Brownies or chocolate chip cookies?

I always stock up on apples, bananas, carrots, peanut butter, cottage cheese and string cheese for snacks, but usually opt to sample the local cuisine at meal time.

And I definitely can’t choose between brownies and cookies, but I suppose if I had to, I’d go with a moist brownie.

Omg, that brownie looks sooo moist and delicious!! Yum. I want one for breakfast!
Your trip looks like it’s been fun so far. I know what you mean about the internet…I was forced to “unplug” a few weeks ago, and it was actually really nice. It makes you appreciate having access again!
I LOVE those recipe cards! Such a great idea to memorialize your grandma.
And I am definitely a chocolate chip cookie girl. :-)

  • Jen

The food at your grandma’s service looks amazing. And those recipe cards are adorable. I’m sure a lot of people will be making things in her memory. Do you want to share the recipes with us? ☺
I am a huge fan of fresh ricotta, and that brownie looks super yummy. I’d take it over a chocolate chip cookie any day! When I travel, I like to have bars and carrots on hand

I LOVE TCHO and Mariposa! YUM! Next time you’re in town we’ll have to do a meet up!

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p0133ec9951e0970b Sara

YES PLEASE!! I’m hoping to come for Foodbuzz in November!

  • http://chicmeetshealthy.blogspot.com Cara @ ChicMeetsHealthy

omg i love so many things in this post. FIRST, i love the idea of putting her photo on the recipe cards, that is so cute and unique… i bet your family appreciated that thoughtful gift.
SECOND, i love that there were a dozen of peppers used as sauce cups! such a cute idea! i am so stealing this!

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p0133ec9951e0970b Sara

I loved the idea too!! You are the pepper queen, so you DEFINITELY need to do this! :-)

  • http://www.cottercrunch.com lindsay

i want to come home with you. Will i fit in your carry on?
    I’ll bring snacks. hehe.

  • http://runwithspoons.wordpress.com Amanda @ .running with spoons.

Grandma’s recipes are definitely the best. It’s like no matter how rotten you’re feeling, or how bad your day is going, a homecooked meal or treat can always make you feel better. I think it’s so sweet that you made those cards so that people can remember your grandma. What a wonderful idea!
Because of my allergies, I tend to have to pack a lot of food with me when I’m traveling, so I do end up eating a lot of the same things as I would at home. BUT, if I do come across something that’s allergy friendly, I definitely jump on it and break the routine. Life’s too short to say no to good food :D As for cookies vs brownies… ooo that’s such a tough one… but I’m gonna have to go with chocolate chip cookies just because they have so much sentimental value for me.

What an incredible way to celebrate a life well lived. :) An awesome tribute to your Grandma, Sarah! :)
I didn’t know you were from the Bay area! I was a nanny in Cupertino for a summer and l-o-v-e-d it. San Fran has my heart-that’s for sure!
    Have a great week!
P.S. Chocolate chip cookies for sure!! (the Nestle Tollhouse recipe)

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p0133ec9951e0970b Sara

Lindsay, you can come home with me anytime! I can’t wait to meet you some day!

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p0133ec9951e0970b Sara

I just realized you have a peanut allergy, so I’ll send you something different instead of those KIND bars!

  • http://profile.typepad.com/6p0133ec9951e0970b Sara

Yes, Nestle Toll House recipe is the BEST!

  • http://fitgirlfoodie.wordpress.com/ Jenny (Fit Girl Foodie)

Ahh I eat cottage cheese, peanut butter, and cereal every night. We’re like twins lol :D

  • http://littlehealthjunkie.wordpress.com Olivia

omg so so fun that you’re going to san fran! I’ve never been there but would absolutely LOVE to…I’ll come visit you while you’re visiting:) I totally agree that taking a short break from blogging and the blogworld is so healthy for you! I missed everybody and missed posting while I was on vaccay, but it feels so rejuvinating to get away and then come back and know you were not only missed but to get back into it! Btw, thank you so so so much for your sweet comments on my blog!! I always look forward to yours because they make me smile and so happy!! (and your most recent one especially really felt great to read!) I love you!! :) and, your idea to write your grandma’s recipes on recipe cards is absolutely genious!! I’m sure everybody appreciated them and that’s truly so thoughtful of you! And congrats to the winner, woop woop!!

  • http://www.thehealthyapron.com thehealthyapron

For some reason, none of your photos are showing? In any case, I loved that idea about giving out your grandmas recipe cards! That is SO super sweet!

I’ve never been to Washington D.C but I have heard it’s a fun town! Expensive though!!

ps. lycopene is actually BETTER for you in processed form (something with the chemical reactions that occur). Eat organic ketcup and the lycopene content is much higher! Same with pasta and pizza sauces!

  • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara

Mmm, now I have a great excuse to squeeze ketchup over everything! I’ll tell people that it’s for health purposes. :-p

My images aren’t showing because I’ve been in the process of transferring my blog to WordPress from Typepad. Unfortunately, none of the images transfered over, so I have to go in and upload them manually. (Uggh!). Slowly, but surely… :)

    Have a great Friday, Erin!

  • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara

Oh, you DEFINITELY need to visit San Francisco!! It’s the most beautiful city in the U.S. (in my very biased opinion, hehe). And thank you so much for your sweet words! I love visiting your blog because it always brightens my day!

  • Sally

Hang in there Sara…your blog will revive itself eventually! So sorry for all the technical glitches!!

  • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara

Aww, thanks! I’m glad it’s up and running now!

  • Sally

Yaaay!!! Beautiful photos…life has returned to your blog! :)

  • Sarah

    Sara!

I’m so honored to have made it into a picture on your blog – that’s a big deal :)

What a wonderful post – nothing is better than the Bay Area. It was great to see you last weekend! Any chance you have those grandma recipes on your computer? Lauren and I only got a few and I would love the rest. If you have them, could you email them to me?

Happy Friday! I will be thinking about you at the family pool on the 4th.

    Sarah

  • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara

It was SO great to see you last week! I have the recipe cards, so I’ll e-mail them to you asap. :-) I really wish I could be at the pool Monday, but at least I’ll get to see you on Christmas Eve this year! <3

  • http://veggie-couture.blogspot.com Gina

Umm Mariposa looks absolutely divine!!! Why aren’t there more GF bakeries?

As for brownies vs cookies, I think it really depends on my mood. Both are pretty high on my favorite desserts list ;)

  • http://www.nourish-and-flourish.net Sara

I agree, Gina! More GF bakeries need to open! It’s a dream of mine to start one myself…Want to join me on a business venture?! ;)

  • http://twitter.com/redvelvetlife Red Velvet Life

Um yes, I would have to go with a brownie too, if it looks like the one above! I love reading about your trip back home and your special tribute to your sweet Grandma — she sounds amazing! And I agree — Grandma’s recipes are always the best! :) My Maw maw, who passed a few years ago, always made the most incredible chocolate fudge over Christmas. And around her, as far as she was concerned, I could never eat too much of her food! (And I generally obliged!)

I love TCHO chocolate — was definitely a staple in my diet in SF. And I’m happy to see them branching out because I’ve already found some here in Pasadena, yay! :)

  • http://thisitalianfamily.wordpress.com/ Rach

It all looks so great! Glad you had such a great time!

  • Molly
